Success Lessons I Learned From John McClane in the Die Hard Films

If there is one character that can always make the best of the bad situation and think on his feet at the same time, it would be John McClane. I’m talking, of course, about the Die Hard films. For those of you not in the know, these are five films starring Bruce Willis in the role that made his career. They also five of the most enjoyable films you could ever want in your collection.

John McClane begins the first movie, entitled Die Hard, as an ordinary New York City cop on his way to visit his wife in Los Angeles for Christmas. It set a romantic weekend, he spends an entire night running around inside an office building, getting shot at, blowing up elevator shafts and looking for a pair of shoes to wear.

While John is doing this, is also trying to thwart the efforts of a band of thieves who are trying to steal millions of dollars worth of bonds. John is completely unprepared to take on this assignment, and he must do everything in his power to not get killed, or getting anyone else in the office building killed.

Talk about having goals. John’s goals for the evening are to stop the bad guys, save his wife, not get killed by the FBI and not be killed by the bad guys. A lesser man would have been killed 10 min. of the film. But not John. He is able to think quickly, assess the situation and make the right decisions that keep them alive for the entire film.

Not having any sort of plan, he keeps moving. He takes massive action constantly, and that takes him forward toward his ultimate success.

  1. In the next film, entitled Die Hard Two, John is at an airport, awaiting his wife’s arrival on the next flight. He sees some unusual activity in the airport, and decides to take action. Once again, the authorities think he’s either meddling or getting in the way. The bad guys, however, knowing he is a threat to their ultimate goals.

John once again relies on persistence, and a never give up attitude to get the job done. He is in the right place at the right time, again. His massive action and quick decision-making make all the difference between stopping the terrorists and having an airport strewn with dead people.

  2. In Die Hard with a Vengeance, John is the target of a thief who is out to rob all the gold in the Federal Reserve Building in Manhattan. He knows who John is, and tries to keep John busy the entire film so that he can concentrate on his robbery. John once again shows persistence, and he never gives up trying to figure out what the thief is up to. Massive action is taken, even though it creates lots of mayhem. Massive action creates results, even if they are messy.

Both Live Free Or Die Hard and A Good Day To Die Hard continue along these same tried and true story ideas. John McClane is a perfect model of someone who knows what he has to do, but has no idea how to get it done. What he does is take massive action directed toward his goal. When things don’t work out, he tries something else. He is more persistent than his adversaries, and that makes all the difference.

We can all learn from the actions of John McClane. We need to have a goal and we need to move on it. We need to take action toward that goal. We must be persistent, and keep trying until we achieve that goal. If you look at any of the Die Hard films, that is what they really are all about.
